Have a great bite in a
historic city

Seeing all the historical sites in Britain’s Heritage Cities is sure to make you hungry, but rest assured that these cities, which span the length and breadth of Britain, have plenty of dining options to sate any hunger. In the oldest house in Bath you can sample the famous “Sally Lunn bun” over a cup of real English tea. Restaurants like Macdonald Alveston Manor in Stratford and Oldfield‘s in Durham pride themselves on locally sourced ingredients like Yorkshire blue cheese. In Canterbury, Marlowe‘s serves up an eclectic menu of everything from fish and chips to Mexican specialties. While you‘re in Oxford, indulge in a classic English delicacy—bangers and mash—at the Big Bang which features a range of ethically raised sausages and bargain lunch specials. One of our friend Tom’s favorite places to get a bite in Chester is at the Grosvenor Arms.  Thirsty? The York Brewery serves up such craft ales as the Yorkshire Terrier and Centurion‘s Ghost.

'Punt' through Oxford

Try something new – or old! Take a punt (a flat-bottomed boat you propel with a pole) along Oxford’s rivers, past colleges and Britain’s oldest Botanic Garden. Punting first became popular in Britain in the mid-eighteenth century and remains one of the most relaxing, and quintessentially British ways to see the town. You could also stroll into ancient college quadrangles and gardens, imbibe the atmosphere of centuries-old hostelries, visit the world’s first public museum or simply circulate among the students in their black and white ‘sub fusc’ as they hurry to and from lectures, exams and celebrations.
